On EmaraTax, an expired trade licence or Emirates ID shows as a "Required Action" on your profile — and you generally can't start or submit a VAT registration until those details are updated and approved by the FTA. Because that update can take time to approve, and VAT registration is due within 30 days of crossing the AED 375,000 threshold (late = AED 10,000 penalty plus back-dated VAT), a portal you left out of date can directly push you into a penalty. The fix is simple: keep your EmaraTax profile current at all times, not just when you need to file.
Most businesses think of EmaraTax as something you only touch when there's a return to file. So expired documents — a renewed trade licence you never uploaded, an Emirates ID that lapsed and was renewed offline — sit on the profile unnoticed. Everything seems fine, because nothing's being filed.
Then the day comes when you do need to act fast — usually a VAT registration triggered by hitting the threshold — and the portal won't let you move until those old items are fixed. The clock that matters (your VAT deadline) keeps running while you wait on an update that the FTA has to approve.
"Required Actions" — the silent blocker
When you open your taxable-person profile on EmaraTax, the FTA flags anything out of date in a Required Actions panel. Typical entries look like this:

These aren't just reminders. Until they're cleared, they can stop you from starting or submitting other applications — including a new VAT registration. The portal effectively says: fix your house in order first.
The portal won't let you register for VAT on an out-of-date profile. So the "VAT clock" and the "fix-your-portal clock" end up running at the same time — and only one of them gives you a penalty.
Two clocks, one penalty
Here's where it bites. The VAT rules are strict and fast; the portal update is slower than you'd hope:
- VAT registration deadline: you must apply within 30 days of crossing the AED 375,000 mandatory threshold (or of expecting to cross it in the next 30 days).
- Late-registration penalty: a fixed AED 10,000 — plus the FTA can back-date your VAT liability to the date you crossed the threshold, so you owe VAT on sales you never charged it on.
- Portal update: correcting a trade licence or Emirates ID needs FTA review and approval, which can take a couple of weeks (often around ~21 days) — and you can't submit the VAT application until it's done.
Put those together and the failure mode is obvious:
The FTA generally doesn't distinguish intentional from accidental delay. "My portal was out of date and the update took three weeks" is not, by itself, a defence. The deadline is the deadline — which is exactly why the time to fix the portal is before you're against the clock.
Keep the portal current — proactively
The whole problem disappears if your EmaraTax profile is never out of date in the first place. A few habits make that automatic:
- Update EmaraTax the moment you renew Renewed your trade licence? Renewed an authorised signatory's Emirates ID or passport? Upload it to EmaraTax straight away — don't wait for a filing.
- Check Required Actions monthly Open your profile and clear any flags while there's no deadline pressure. Five minutes now saves a penalty later.
- Watch your rolling 12-month turnover Track taxable supplies on a rolling basis so the AED 375,000 threshold never surprises you — and you start registration with time to spare.
- Keep signatory details live Expired IDs for owners or authorised signatories block actions too — keep them current, not just the licence.
- Build in buffer before deadlines Assume any portal update needs a few weeks' approval, and act early enough that approval lands before your VAT (or other) deadline.
If your turnover is climbing toward AED 375,000, don't wait until you cross it. Get your EmaraTax profile fully clean — licence, IDs, signatory details — before you need to register, so when the threshold hits, the application goes straight through.
