Can I Sponsor My Parents in the UAE? Salary, Documents & Process

Yes. UAE residents can sponsor their parents, provided they hold a valid residence visa and meet the higher income and document requirements. Parent sponsorship is generally granted as a one-year renewable residence visa, subject to approval.

Parent Sponsorship at a Glance

Sponsoring parents is a stricter category than sponsoring a spouse or children — higher salary, proof of dependency and (in Dubai) a security deposit.

Eligibility Criteria

To sponsor your parents in the UAE, you must:

💡

Lower-salary humanitarian route

If you don't meet the AED 20,000 threshold, Dubai's GDRFA offers a humanitarian residence route through Amer centres with a lower salary requirement of around AED 10,000, granted on a case-by-case basis. Rules differ by emirate — we can check which route fits your situation.

Both Parents, or Just One?

In most cases the UAE requires you to sponsor both parents together. Sponsoring one parent only is considered in exceptional circumstances.

👫 Both parents

The standard expectation — your father and mother are sponsored together under a single application.

👤 One parent only

Possible with supporting documents in cases such as death of the other parent, divorce, legal separation, or other valid reasons. If the other parent is alive and not being sponsored, a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from that parent is usually required. Additional documentation will be required.

Required Documents

Foreign-issued documents may need attestation and Arabic legal translation before submission — start that early.

👴 Parents' Documents

  • Passport copy (valid 6+ months)
  • Passport-size photo (white background)
  • Birth certificate of the sponsor (attested — proves the relationship)
  • Parents' marriage certificate (if requested)

🧾 Sponsor's Documents

  • Passport copy
  • UAE residence visa copy
  • Emirates ID copy
  • Salary certificate or employment contract
  • Tenancy contract (Ejari)
  • Latest utility bill / bank statements (if requested)

➕ Additional Requirements

  • Consulate affidavit confirming you are the sole provider
  • NOC from the second parent (if alive and not being sponsored)
  • Medical fitness test for parents (where applicable)
  • Valid UAE health insurance for each parent
  • Security deposit (if required by immigration)

The Parent Visa Process

Once your documents and salary evidence are ready, the process moves through five stages.

1

Entry permit

Apply for an entry permit if your parent is outside the UAE (or a status change if they are already inside on a visit visa).

2

Medical fitness test

Parents complete the UAE medical fitness examination where applicable.

3

Health insurance

Arrange valid health insurance coverage for each parent — mandatory before stamping.

4

Emirates ID application

Submit the Emirates ID application and complete biometrics.

5

Residence visa stamping

Once approved, the parent's residence visa is issued digitally and linked to their passport.

🗓️

Visa validity

Parent visas are usually issued for one year and renewable annually, as long as you continue to meet the eligibility requirements and maintain valid health insurance throughout the visa period.

⚠️

Important notes

Immigration approval is discretionary and subject to authority review. Salary, accommodation and document requirements can vary by emirate and individual circumstances. Foreign-issued documents may require attestation and legal translation, and health insurance must remain valid for the whole visa period.
