How to Generate a UAE Tax Invoice from Shopify (When You’re VAT Registered)

Selling on Shopify and registered for VAT in the UAE? You've probably noticed Shopify gives you an order confirmation and a taxes report — but not an FTA-compliant tax invoice. Here's the gap, and the one-time fix.

Quick answer

Shopify does not issue UAE tax invoices out of the box — it produces order confirmations and a taxes summary report. If you're VAT-registered in the UAE you must issue a proper Tax Invoice (showing the words “Tax Invoice,” your TRN, VAT shown separately, amounts in AED). The fix is a one-time setup: install a dedicated invoice app from the Shopify App Store, configure it with your company details and TRN, and it generates compliant tax invoices per order. Stripe handles the payment; the app handles the tax document. Your Shopify taxes report is useful to reconcile the return — but it is not a substitute for the invoices themselves.

It's a problem almost every VAT-registered Shopify seller in the UAE runs into at their first VAT return: the accountant asks for the period's sales tax invoices, you go into Shopify… and there aren't any. Shopify gives you orders and a taxes report, and Stripe gives you a payment record — but none of those is a tax invoice in the way UAE VAT law means it. The good news: it's a quick, one-time fix.

The gap

Shopify + Stripe give you an order and a payment — not a tax invoice

When a customer checks out, Shopify records an order and sends an order confirmation, and your payment gateway (Stripe, for example) records the payment. Both are useful, but neither is a UAE tax invoice. An order confirmation is not addressed or formatted as a tax document, and a Stripe payment receipt just confirms money changed hands. As a VAT-registered business, you're required to issue a proper tax invoice for your taxable supplies — that obligation sits with you, not the platform.

What the UAE requires

What a compliant UAE tax invoice must show

Under the UAE VAT Executive Regulations, a full tax invoice must contain, at minimum:

Required on a UAE tax invoice
The words “Tax Invoice” clearly displayed
Your name, address and TRN (the supplier)
The recipient's name and address — and their TRN if they're VAT-registered
A sequential / unique invoice number
The date of issue (and date of supply, if different)
A description of the goods or services
Unit price, quantity, the rate of VAT, and the amount payable — in AED
Any discount, the gross amount payable, and the VAT amount — in AED
Selling to consumers? A simplified tax invoice is usually fine

For B2C sales — where the customer isn't VAT-registered, or the supply is under AED 10,000 — a simplified tax invoice is allowed. It still needs the words “Tax Invoice,” your name/address/TRN, the date, a description, and the total plus the VAT amount. Most Shopify stores selling to the public fall here.

What Shopify actually gives you

The order confirmation and the taxes report — and why neither is enough

Out of the box, Shopify gives you two relevant things, and it's worth being clear about what each is:

Don't confuse the taxes report with your invoices

The taxes report tells you how much VAT you collected in the period. Your VAT return and your records need the actual tax invoices behind those numbers — the report helps you check the totals reconcile, but it can't replace the documents.

The fix

Install a tax-invoice app — a one-time setup

The practical solution is a dedicated invoice app from the Shopify App Store (there are several built specifically for this). You set it up once and it then generates a compliant tax invoice for every order automatically — no manual work per sale. When you configure it, make sure it's set to produce a genuine UAE tax invoice:

Once it's running, you can export or download the invoices for any period and hand them straight to your accountant at VAT-filing time.

At filing time

What your tax agent actually needs for the VAT return

To file your VAT return, your accountant needs the sales tax invoices and purchase invoices for the period — not just the Shopify taxes summary. The workflow that works: export the period's tax invoices from your invoice app, pull the Shopify taxes report to reconcile the totals, and add your purchase invoices for input VAT. Keep all of it — UAE VAT records must be retained for at least five years.

If reconciling Shopify, Stripe payouts and your invoices sounds like a headache, that's exactly the sort of e-commerce VAT work we take off clients' plates — see our VAT filing service or accounting & bookkeeping.

FAQ
Does Shopify generate UAE VAT tax invoices automatically?

No. Out of the box Shopify produces order confirmations and a taxes report (a summary of VAT collected), not FTA-compliant tax invoices. To issue proper UAE tax invoices — with the words “Tax Invoice,” your TRN, VAT shown separately and amounts in AED — you install a dedicated invoice app from the Shopify App Store and configure it once. It then generates a compliant invoice for each order.

What must a UAE tax invoice include?

A full UAE tax invoice must show the words “Tax Invoice,” your name, address and TRN, the recipient's details (and their TRN if registered), a sequential invoice number, the issue date, a description of the goods or services, the unit price, quantity and VAT rate, any discount, and the gross amount and VAT amount — all in AED. For B2C sales where the customer isn't registered or the supply is under AED 10,000, a simplified tax invoice showing “Tax Invoice,” your TRN, the date, a description and the total plus VAT amount is acceptable.

Is the Shopify taxes report enough to file my VAT return?

Not on its own. The taxes report summarises how much VAT you collected by region and rate, which is useful for reconciling your return, but it is a totals report — not a set of tax invoices. Your VAT return and your records need the actual sales tax invoices behind those totals, plus your purchase invoices for input VAT.

How do I make Shopify issue compliant tax invoices for the UAE?

Install a dedicated invoice app from the Shopify App Store and configure it once with your company name, address and TRN, VAT at 5% shown separately, amounts in AED, sequential numbering, and a header that reads “Tax Invoice.” After that one-time setup it generates a compliant tax invoice for every order automatically, which you can export for VAT filing.

Does collecting payment through Stripe count as issuing a tax invoice?

No. Stripe (or any payment gateway) records the payment and can issue a payment receipt, but that is not a tax invoice. The obligation to issue a proper tax invoice for your taxable supplies sits with you as the VAT-registered supplier, which is why a Shopify invoice app — separate from the payment gateway — is needed.
