What Does a Tax Consultant in Dubai Do?

A tax consultant in Dubai helps UAE businesses stay compliant with the Federal Tax Authority across three main areas:

VAT compliance — registering for VAT when the AED 375,000 threshold is met, filing quarterly VAT returns through EmaraTax by the 28th of each month, recovering input VAT on eligible expenses, and managing VAT deregistration when required.

Corporate tax filing — registering for UAE corporate tax, computing taxable income, electing Small Business Relief for eligible businesses, and submitting the annual CT return within 9 months of the financial year end.

FTA representation — handling FTA audit queries, voluntary disclosures, penalty waiver applications, and tax residency certificate (TRC) applications on a client's behalf.

Beyond compliance, a good tax consultant also advises on structuring — free zone vs mainland, qualifying for the 0% corporate tax rate as a QFZP, and ensuring your business does not pay more tax than it legally needs to.

Why FTA Registration Is Non-Negotiable

The UAE Federal Tax Authority maintains a public register of licensed Tax Agents. Only FTA-registered tax agents are legally authorised to file VAT returns and corporate tax returns on behalf of a UAE business through the EmaraTax portal.

⚠️ Critical Point

If your accountant is not FTA-registered, they cannot file on your behalf. You remain legally responsible for every return, and every penalty falls on your business — not theirs.

The FTA register is publicly verifiable. Any business can check whether a firm holds a valid tax agent licence at tax.gov.ae. A legitimate consultant will give you their TRN immediately.

Fastlane Management Consultancy is FTA-registered. TRN: 104218042400003. Verify this on the FTA's official registered tax agents list.

UAE Tax Obligations: What Every Dubai Business Must File

VAT (Value Added Tax)

VAT was introduced in the UAE on 1 January 2018 at a standard rate of 5%. Mandatory registration is required when taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 in any 12-month period. Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500.

Once registered, you must file a VAT return for every tax period — typically quarterly — by the 28th of the following month. Penalties: AED 1,000 for the first late filing. Late payment carries a 2% immediate penalty, 4% after 7 days, and 1% per day thereafter.

Corporate Tax (CT)

UAE corporate tax came into effect for financial years beginning on or after 1 June 2023, under Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022. The rate is 9% on taxable income above AED 375,000, and 0% below that threshold.

Every UAE business — mainland, free zone, and branch — must register for corporate tax and file an annual CT return, even if no tax is payable. Filing deadline: 9 months from financial year end. Late registration: AED 10,000. Late filing: AED 500/month.

Businesses with revenue below AED 3 million can elect Small Business Relief (zero CT liability) — but the election must be made actively in the CT return.

Bookkeeping and Accounting

Maintaining IFRS-compliant accounting records is a legal requirement under the UAE Corporate Tax Law. Businesses must retain records for 7 years. Failure to maintain adequate records: AED 10,000 penalty (first offence), AED 20,000 for each repeat.

What Tax Consultant Services Cost in Dubai (2026)

One of the most common complaints about tax consultants in Dubai is the lack of pricing transparency. Hidden fees, hourly rates that balloon, and retainer agreements that auto-renew.

How to Choose a Tax Consultant in Dubai

Not every accountant in Dubai is qualified to act as your FTA tax agent. Here is what to check:

1
Verify FTA Registration
Ask for their TRN and check it on the FTA's registered tax agents list. If they cannot provide a TRN, they are not authorised to file on your behalf.
2
Check UAE-Specific Experience
UAE tax law — particularly around free zones, QFZP conditions, and VAT-CT interaction — is distinct. Years of UAE experience matter more than generic qualifications.
3
Confirm EmaraTax Portal Access
Your consultant should file under their own tax agent credentials. If they ask you to log in and submit yourself, they are advisors, not agents.
4
Ask About Response Time
FTA issues queries with tight deadlines — sometimes 5 working days. Your consultant needs to be reachable and responsive.
5
Get Fixed Pricing in Writing
Insist on a written engagement letter with itemised fees before signing anything.

FTA Audits: What Happens If You Are Selected

The FTA conducted 93,000 inspections in 2024 — a 135% year-on-year increase. Audit selection is triggered by mismatches between VAT and CT returns, late filings, unusually high input VAT recovery claims, and industry-wide compliance campaigns.

If you receive an FTA audit notice, engaging an FTA-registered tax agent immediately is the single most important step.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — you can file directly through EmaraTax. However, errors in VAT classification, emirate-wise reporting, reverse charge treatment, or input VAT recovery can trigger FTA penalties of AED 1,000–50,000+. Professional filing from AED 149/quarter eliminates that risk.
A tax agent is FTA-registered and can file returns on your behalf. A tax consultant provides advisory without direct FTA filing authority. Fastlane is both — registered agents who also advise on structuring and compliance.
Fees range from AED 149/quarter for basic VAT filing to AED 499–2,000/month for full compliance packages including bookkeeping and corporate tax. Fastlane publishes fixed prices — no hourly rates, no retainers.
Yes. Registration and filing are mandatory for all UAE businesses regardless of whether tax is payable. The filing deadline is 9 months from financial year end. Late filing: AED 500/month penalty.
Free zone companies may qualify for the 0% rate as a Qualifying Free Zone Person (QFZP). This is not automatic — it requires meeting 6 specific conditions, filing an annual CT return, and maintaining audited financials. Fastlane assesses QFZP eligibility as part of every free zone CT filing.
