What Is Corporate Tax?

What Every UAE Business Must Know

The UAE introduced a federal Corporate Tax (CT) effective for financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023 under Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022. Every business — mainland or free zone — must register with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA).

Registration happens through the EmaraTax portal and results in a Corporate Tax Registration Number (CTRN), which is required in all tax filings and FTA correspondence.

Missing the deadline means a fixed AED 10,000 penalty — non-waivable in most cases. Our experts submit your application correctly the first time, with no rejections.

📋 Who Must Register?

All UAE trade license holders — mainland and free zone — plus natural persons doing business in the UAE.

📅 Registration Deadline

New businesses: within 90 days of license issuance. Check the deadline table below for your license month.

💼 Corporate Tax Rate

9% on taxable income above AED 375,000. 0% on income up to AED 375,000. Free zone benefits may apply.

❌ Late Penalty

AED 10,000 fixed administrative penalty for missing the FTA registration deadline. Non-waivable in most cases.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is corporate tax registration mandatory for all UAE businesses?
Yes — without exception. Under Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022, all juridical persons with a valid UAE trade license (mainland or free zone) and all natural persons conducting business activities must register with the FTA. Exemptions exist only for specific government entities explicitly exempt under the law.
What happens if I missed my registration deadline?
The FTA imposes a fixed AED 10,000 administrative penalty for late registration. In some circumstances a Voluntary Disclosure can help manage the situation. The key is to register immediately — further delays compound the issue. Contact us and we'll advise on penalty reconsideration options available to you.
Can a free zone company be exempt from corporate tax?
A free zone entity qualifying as a "Qualifying Free Zone Person" (QFZP) can access a 0% CT rate on Qualifying Income. However, FTA registration remains mandatory for all free zone entities — the exemption doesn't remove the registration obligation. Non-qualifying income remains subject to 9%.
What is Small Business Relief and do I qualify?
Small Business Relief lets businesses with revenue up to AED 3 million elect zero taxable income, simplifying compliance significantly. Available for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2026. You must still register for CT to claim it. Fastlane handles both registration and Small Business Relief from AED 249.
How long does corporate tax registration take?
The FTA processes complete applications within 3–10 working days. Fastlane submits within 1 working day of receiving all documents, then follows up with the FTA. Most clients receive their CTRN within 24–72 hours of our submission.
Does my dormant company need to register?
Yes. The FTA requires registration for all valid UAE trade license holders — active or dormant, generating revenue or not. If dormant or below AED 3M revenue, Small Business Relief can simplify your annual obligations significantly. But registration itself remains mandatory.
What is the corporate tax rate in UAE?
9% on taxable income exceeding AED 375,000. 0% up to AED 375,000. Qualifying Free Zone Persons may access 0% on Qualifying Income. Multinational groups with global revenue above EUR 750M are subject to a 15% Domestic Minimum Top-up Tax.
Can Fastlane file my annual CT return after registration?
Absolutely. We provide full CT services: registration, annual return filing, Small Business Relief elections, tax planning, and de-registration. Annual filing from AED 249. Most registration clients continue with us for annual filing — complete peace of mind at a fraction of big-firm costs.
