The 6-Month Rule, Explained
When a UAE resident sponsors a spouse, child, or parent for a residence visa, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) — or GDRFA in Dubai — requires the dependent's passport to carry at least six months of remaining validity on the date the application is submitted.
The logic is practical. A dependent visa is stamped into (or digitally linked to) the passport, the applicant undergoes a medical test and Emirates ID biometrics, and the whole process can take one to three weeks. Authorities will not issue a residence visa against a travel document that could expire mid-process or shortly after issuance.
📌 Free zone applications too: IFZA, DMCC, RAKEZ, DSO, Meydan and other free zone authorities apply the same minimum 6-month passport validity requirement for dependent visas processed under their establishment cards. RAKEZ, for example, explicitly lists "applicant's passport with validity of at least 6 months" in its dependent visa checklist.
Whose Passports Need 6 Months Validity?
This is where families get caught out. Depending on who is being sponsored, up to three passports may need to meet validity expectations:

What Happens If Validity Is Less Than 6 Months?
Passport validity below six months is consistently cited among the top documentation reasons for dependent visa rejection, alongside improperly attested certificates and tenancy contract errors. In practice, one of three things happens:
1. Outright rejection. The application is returned, and typing centre or portal fees for that submission may not be refundable.
2. The application stalls. Some channels hold the file pending a renewed passport — meanwhile a dependent inside the UAE on a visit visa keeps burning days toward overstay.
3. Forced re-application. If the entry permit was already issued and the passport is renewed mid-process, documents may need to be re-linked to the new passport number, adding cost and time.
The fix is simple: renew the passport first, then apply. Most consulates in the UAE offer expedited passport renewal; factor in 1–4 weeks depending on nationality.
The Other Requirements (Beyond Passport Validity)
Passport validity is necessary but not sufficient. A complete dependent visa file typically includes:
