What Is a Tax Residency Certificate in the UAE?
A Tax Residency Certificate (TRC), also known as a Tax Domicile Certificate, is an official document issued by the UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA) confirming that an individual or company is a UAE tax resident for a specific 12-month period.
The TRC is essential for claiming benefits under the UAE’s Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAAs) — treaties signed with 146+ countries that prevent the same income from being taxed twice. With a valid TRC, you can reduce or eliminate withholding taxes on dividends, interest, royalties, and other cross-border income.
The UAE issues two types of TRC:
📄 Treaty TRC (DTAA Purpose): Used to claim tax treaty benefits in another country — such as reduced withholding tax on foreign income. This is the most common type.
📄 Domestic TRC: Used for local purposes — banking, immigration, proving tax residency to UAE authorities or foreign regulators, CRS/FATCA compliance.
💡 Important: Offshore companies cannot obtain a TRC. They can only receive a Tax Exemption Certificate (TEC), which is a different document with different benefits.
💰 Key TRC Benefits
✓ Avoid double taxation on cross-border income
✓ Reduced withholding tax on dividends & royalties
✓ Proof of tax residency for foreign authorities
✓ CRS/FATCA compliance documentation
✓ Enhanced credibility for international business
✓ Tax planning optimisation for global income
